William Gregory Bethune, age 77, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on February 7, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories shaped by service, loyalty, and a deep love for the things that brought him joy.
Greg was born February 11, 1948, in Rockingham, NC to the late Archie and Nellie Bethune. He graduated from West Mecklenburg High School where he played football and was often fondly referred to as a “Class Clown.” A proud United States Army veteran, Greg served his country with honor and carried that sense of duty and integrity throughout his life. His strength, discipline, and quiet perseverance were evident in everything he did.
When he wasn’t working or spending time with family, you could almost always find him enjoying the things he loved most. An avid golfer, he found peace on the course, where his patience was tested and his precision challenged. The sound of beach music could instantly lift his spirits, often bringing a smile and a few dance moves along with it. Greg really enjoyed telling funny stories and would have everyone laughing hysterically before the story’s end. Also ranking at the top of Greg’s list of favorite things were Mr. Goodbars, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, coffee, Little Debbie Honey Buns, Bonanza episodes, and our dog, Baxter.
Sports were a true passion. Greg coached numerous sports teams for which his son and grandson played. He faithfully followed baseball and football, cheering on the Atlanta Braves and Carolina Panthers with enthusiasm and play-by-play debates. College basketball season always meant one thing in his household—Duke basketball—a lifelong loyalty that never wavered.
Above all, Greg will be remembered for his love of family and friends, his steady presence, and his ability to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. He leaves behind those who will miss his laughter, his stories, and the quiet moments spent together.
Greg is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 56 years, Betty Bethune; son, Brent (Ivey) Bethune; daughter, Tammy Reel; grandsons, Lucas (Caroline) Reel and Vince Bethune; granddaughters, Scarlett (Dalton) Shaw and Savannah Reel; and great-granddaughter, Addie James Reel. He is also survived by beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Greg was also preceded in death by his brother Earl (Linda) Bethune.
A service to honor his life will be held at McEwen Funerals & Cremations at Forest Lawn West, 4601 Freedom Drive, Charlotte, NC, on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 11:30am. The family asks that you take a moment to enjoy a round of golf, a favorite beach song, a funny story, or a ballgame on TV—just as he would have.
