William L. Crowell, 89, of Charlotte passed away on the morning of Wednesday, December 4, 2019 with his wife and son by his side. Bill was born on the 29th of March 1930 in Roxboro, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Joe Lee Crowell, Sr. and Mary Ellen Snead Crowell. He was a loving husband of 63 years to Mary Katherine (Kaye) Bennett Crowell.
He graduated from Charlotte Tech High School in 1950 and joined the U.S. Air Force serving during the Korean War and rising to the rank of Staff sergeant. Following his military service, he studied at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Miami, Florida. Bill then worked in the telecommunications industry as an installer until his retirement in 2005.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and friend to many. Bill was a of member the Telephone Pioneers of America and the American Legion. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, antique telephones, refinishing antique furniture, model trains and Ford Mustangs. If anything broke he could usually fix it.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Crowell was preceded in death by his brothers, Thomas E. Crowell and Joe Lee Crowell, Jr., as well as his granddaughter, Erin Casey Crowell.
He is survived by his wife, Kaye Crowell; his son, Dr. William L. Crowell, Jr. (Denise); his sister, Mary Frances Crowell; his grandson, Patrick; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside funeral service to celebrate the life of Mr. Crowell will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at Sharon Memorial Park, Charlotte, NC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
