

William Smith Crowley (88) of Charlotte, North Carolina, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, January 18, 2026. Born on August 27, 1937, in Charlotte, he was the cherished son of the late John Edward Crowley and Mary Elizabeth Crowley.
William, affectionately known as Bill, was a beacon of kindness and strength. He was a man deeply rooted in his faith, which guided him throughout his life and inspired those around him. Bill had a warmth that drew people in; he loved engaging in conversations and forging connections with others. His friendly demeanor and genuine interest in people made him a beloved figure within his community.
Bill’s educational journey took him through Belmont Abbey and the University of South Carolina, where he cultivated not only knowledge but also lifelong friendships. His professional path led him to a dedicated career at Belk, where he was respected and admired for his hard work and commitment.
A devout member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Bill was active in his community. He volunteered at the former Mercy Hospital emergency room, now known as Atrium Health Pineville, where his compassionate spirit shone bright. His involvement in the exercise class at the YMCA brought him joy and camaraderie, furthering his love for staying active and healthy.
Bill cherished the fond memories of traveling to Europe with his parents and sister during his youth and enjoyed cross-country adventures with his dear friend, Jean. These experiences enriched his life and provided him with stories that he loved to share with family and friends.
He is survived by his beloved brother, Thomas J. Crowley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews who adored him: Ann B. Crowley, Prudy Kornegay, Katherine Dickson, Elizabeth Rudder, Patricia Smith, Marion Scherger, and nephews Sean Crowley, Michael Crowley, and Todd Crowley. Bill was also adored by nineteen great-nieces and nephews and twenty-one great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry his spirit forward.
In recent years, Bill was fortunate to have the support of caring neighbors from Jasper Ridge Drive, in particular two special friends, Anne Ferrant and Walter Siancas. They became his true friends and showed him true friendship and kindness. Their dedication to helping him during some of his later years was a testament to the compassion and generosity that Bill embodied throughout his life.
William was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Crowley Eggleston and brother John E. Crowley Jr and sisters-in-law Rose Mary Crowley and Ann Crowley but the legacy of love and kindness he imparted will endure in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a profound example of faith and compassion for future generations to follow.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on January 28, 2028, at 12pm at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, located at 7095 Waxhaw Highway in Lancaster, South Carolina. Burial will follow immediately at Sharon Memorial Park, located at 5716 Monroe Road in Charlotte.
