

A graduate of Balls Creek High School, Ernie went on to serve his country honorably as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he built a long and dedicated career, working with Broyhill Furniture Company, Western Electric, and AT&T, and later serving as a groundskeeper at Back Creek.
Ernie was a faithful member of Back Creek ARP Church and Mallard Creek Presbyterian Church. He was also an active member of the AT&T Pioneers and the Stumptown Tractor Club, where he shared his passion for community and fellowship.
A man of many talents, Ernie was known for being friendly, skillful, and multi-talented. He found great joy in deer hunting, restoring and working with hit-and-miss engines, attending antique tractor shows, and gardening. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family, who will remember him most for his unwavering love and dedication.
Ernie’s life was a testament to service, kindness, and devotion. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Ernie was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 41 years, Thelma Johnson Jones, and his wife of 24 years, JoAnn Christenbury Jones.
He is survived by his brother, Bob Jones (Vivian) of Maiden, NC; daughters, Sandy Epting (Jay) of Indian Trail, NC, and Lisa Oehler (Larry) of Iron Station, NC. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Shannon Epting of Indian Trail, NC; Josh Oehler (Lauren) of Taylorsville, NC; and Ryan Oehler (Whitney) of Denver, NC; and great-grandchildren, Calla Oehler of Taylorsville, NC, and Olivia and Hudson Oehler of Denver, NC.
A private burial will be held with family at Back Creek ARP Church, 1821 Back Creek Church Road, Charlotte, NC 28213.
