William "Bill" Schwartz

March 8, 1931June 24, 2020

Charlotte - William “Bill” Schwartz passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family following a short Non-Covid illness on June 24, 2020. He was born March 8, 1931 in Charlotte, NC to Selma and Ben Schwartz, and raised in Newport News, VA.

Words cannot adequately describe what a truly special and amazing person Bill was. His bright smile, upbeat attitude, wit and genuine goodness of heart, brought joy to the family, friends, employees, fellow volunteers and strangers who were lucky enough to cross paths with him over the years.

After serving in Korea and attending the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Bill’s entrepreneurial spirit brought him to Gastonia, NC, where his unique business instincts led him to successfully create three different companies from scratch during the course of his career. Retirement did not slow him down and Bill greatly enjoyed his time volunteering for Jewish Family Services, The Butterfly Project, and Julia’s Café & Books/Habitat for Humanity of Charlotte, where he got to do what he loved best – helping and talking to people.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years Fran; brother, Donald; his sons, Benjamin and Scott, daughter-in-law Tobin; and his cherished granddaughters, Aven and Siveya.

Services will be privately held.

Fran, I was so sorry to see in the Gazette about Bill's passing! He was a wonderful man and was very special to my family when my mother, Peggy Brown, worked for him. He was also so attentive to my brother, John and that was much appreciated. I have memories of babysitting for your children (wow......I'm feeling really old).......they were precious boys!!
My husband, Mickey and I will lift your family in prayers during the upcoming rough days. Peggy B Smith

Bill had a contagious smile that would always make you feel good no matter how your day may be going. He would always wave to you and if you wanted to talk he was there to listen. I don't think he ever met a stranger. He made Saint Michaels a better community and will be missed by many, but we know that he is in a better place.

Dear Fran,
I am so sad to hear that Billy passed away. I know so many people felt like I do, he was truly one of my favorite people. Working with him at Jewish Family Services & The Butterfly Project; & buying a cup of coffee from him at Julia’s , was always something I looked forward to. I know you & your sons will miss him so. But as they said at the Shiva service, their father instilled in them the very best of himself. So he will live on thru them; & thru all the acts of kindness that people will tell you about.
I am sending you love & hugs, nancy

When my daughter started her career as volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity, Bill was one of the first volunteers she signed up. Her name is Julia , yesterday she called quite upset to hear of his passing. Yes he did touch the people around him, she was heartbroken. So as her mom, because she is my sweetheart of a daughter, I wanted his family to know how special he was, and I am happy that Julia shared a small part of her life with him. So very sorry for your loss.
