Born December 14, 1943 in Lancaster, SC, Billy was the son of the late William Jefferson Sims and Sarah Bellune Sims. After his move to Charlotte with his parents, Billy was employed at Carolinas Medical Center, now Atrium Carolinas Medical Center, in the dietary department. He recently retired from there after 53 years.
Billy was a longtime member of GraceLife Church in Pineville. While there, he was an active member of the Cancer Committee and would do anything asked of him. He loved God and his church family. It was frequently said about him, "if it's Sunday and Billy is not working, he'll be at church". His seat was always on the front row, usually accompanied by Michael Stewart and his family. He also volunteered at the Billy Graham Library for many years on the Saturdays he was not working. The Carolina Panthers were his favorite football team win or lose; he would be watching them. He did prefer them to win! He also was a member of the Stough Baptist Church Men's Softball Team (this was before the church became GraceLife Church). He was "Coach" and was there to support the team no matter the final score of their games.
He is survived by sisters Elizabeth Dianne Smith of Stockbridge, GA and Vicky Sims Skinner of Concord, NC; nieces Adrianne Smith McKita and Julia Smith Kelley both of McDonough, GA; Stephanie Skinner Matthews of Concord and Heather Skinner Schiffman of Charlotte. He is also survived by many cousins.
The family appreciates the outpouring of love and support during the last three months, especially his church and work family, Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte, and the staff of Brighton Gardens of Charlotte. You will all be in our hearts forever.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at the graveside at Sharon Memorial Park Cemetery, 5716 Monroe Rd., Charlotte, NC 28212 on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at 11 am.
