Anne Hargrett Lavieri, 91, passed away on Christmas morning in Charlottesville, Virginia where she lived with her family. She was born on February 7, 1931 in Connecticut to Helen Keith Griffin Hargrett Howd of Connecticut and Lester Hargrett of Georgia. Her parents gave her all the opportunities she could desire. Her stepfather, Hadleigh Howd, also of Connecticut, was a wonderful influence in her life as well.
She is survived by her daughter, Deirdre Lavieri & her husband, Brion Friedman, of Charlottesville, Virginia; two grandchildren, Haines & his fiancée, Marissa Kogan, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Reilly of Fort Collins, Colorado; her brother, Hadleigh Howd & his wife, Carolyn, of Florida; and Michelle Desmond Rarick of Washington.
In her early life, Anne attended schools in Connecticut and in New York. She graduated from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Anne worked at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in La Jolla, California and later at the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC, where she worked on the International Geophysical Year project and was a liaison between the program and her alma mater.
After growing up in New England, she lived in cities as diverse as New York, Washington, DC, and Atlanta. In her younger years, she adored visiting the southwestern United States with her father as he pursued his life's work, research and preservation of indigenous languages and culture. Anne loved traveling widely, particularly to England, Scotland, France & Hawaii, and always treasured her quiet summers in Maine. Her lifelong domestic and international travels, and the fascinating people she met along the way, gave her a unique perspective on the tapestry of American life.
Anne will be buried in the Simsbury Cemetery in Simsbury, Connecticut following a memorial service in the summer of 2023. She will be buried alongside her mother and grandmother, Lenora Merlyn Griffin, and amongst many other ancestors including her ninth great grandmother, Mercy Buell, who was the first person buried in the historic graveyard in 1688.
Given her love for all her kitties, past and present, memorial donations can be made to Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org).
