

Anne Cooke Strickler died on November 21, 2016as a result of a hard fought battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Elizabeth, NJ on August 26, 1931 to Henry Harrison and Anne P. Cooke who predeceased her. She was also predeceased in death by a daughter Anne Kearsley. Anne attended Robert Morris School and Vail Deanne School in Elizabeth, NJ and graduated from the Stuart Hall School, Staunton, VA. She graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College, Washington, DC, and Tobe Coburn School of Fashion Design in New York City. After graduation Anne worked in Boston at Filene’s Department Store in the training Department for several years. In 1954 she married Alfred B. Strickler, Jr. her long time sweetheart whom she had known since the 10th grade. Since Anne’s middle name was Washington, she carried the nickname of “Washie” for the first 25 years of her life and was still called that by her longtime friends. Anne was vivacious, lively, attractive and had a contagious laugh. She was always up for any mischief that would be harmless fun. Her outlook was sunny and she could find the positive side in any situation. She had strong beliefs and high ideals and never hesitated to express them. Anne was a very good athlete and was captain of the Stuart Hall field hockey team for two years. She also played on their tennis team. In later life she almost mastered the game of golf and continued to play tennis and paddle tennis. She served on the Board of Governors at Stuart Hall from 2004 to 2007. Her civic passion was Planned Parenthood where she served as Board Chair of the Lancaster, PA affiliate and led a campaign to raise $1,100,000 to build a new clinic in 1985. After moving to Virginia in 1995 she became Chair of the Planned Parenthood Advisory Board in Charlottesville and later as Board Chair for Planned Parenthood affiliate of the Blue Ridge. She was a lifelong dedicated worker and contributor to the causes of women’s choices and family planning. She was a wonderful wife always supporting her husband Al as they moved seven times around the US and Canada with him in his business career. She loved to travel and together, she and Al, visited thirty two countries. Anne loved her children and their children. She is survived by her daughter Muffy Kennedy and her husband David and their son James. Also her son Al III his wife Leslie and their three children Olivia, Harrison and Margaret Anne. Also, by her sister Mary Harrison Carle of Newtown Square, PA and daughter Rebecca Carle of Washington, DC. She will always live in our memories as a sparkling, determined, optimistic woman who loved life. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church, Ivy, VA on Saturday, November 26th at 4:30 p.m., the Rev. Eric Liles presiding.
