Born on January 23, 1940, in Earlysville, Virginia, Carlton was the son of the late Earl and Florence Wood.
Carlton was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Florence Wood; his beloved wife, Joyce Roberts Wood; and his daughter, Christina Wood.
He is survived by his son, Dwayne Wood and wife Kim; his daughter, Molly White and husband Chat; his grandchildren, Lauren Porcaro, Chelsea Whisnant and husband Matt, Ryan Porcaro and wife Libbie, and Anthony Wood and wife Lauren. He is also survived by his cherished great-grandchildren, Wade and Walker Wood, Quinn and Adeline Whisnant, and Everett Porcaro.
Carlton is further survived by his brothers, Wayne Wood; Andy Wood and wife Debbie; his sister, Judy Batten and husband Fred; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
Known to many as “Grandaddy,” Carlton spent many years working as an auto mechanic. He was employed for many years at HM Gleason’s and then with Dettor, Edwards and Morris, Inc. He was also a proud second-generation farmer whose heart never strayed far from the land. A faithful member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church in Earlysville for more than 60 years, Carlton remained devoted to his church family even when declining health prevented him from attending services in recent years.
Farming was not simply a livelihood for Carlton—it was his passion. He loved spending his days with his cows, caring for his beloved barn cats, and working around the family farm. He enjoyed tending his garden and was known for his green thumb. Carlton especially loved Joyce’s home-cooked meals and never turned down a sweet treat. Above all, he treasured his family. He found great joy in watching his children become parents and his grandchildren become parents themselves. He loved sharing his knowledge of farming, cattle, and hard work with his son Dwayne and grandson Anthony, passing along lessons that will continue for generations.
A graveside service will be held at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Earlysville, Virginia, on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to attend and celebrate Carlton’s life and legacy.
