Carolyn Mattie Barbour

Born on Christmas Day in 1945 to Martha and Alfred Barbour, Carolyn, or oftentimes referred to as Mama Cala, Nanny, Big Red, and many other nicknames, was known as the ultimate selfless caregiver and source of peace who often took care of her siblings, kids, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews— helping mold us into the individuals we are today.

Mama Cala sacrificed her education in 10th grade to become the sole caretaker of her siblings, and then went on to raise four daughters of her own. She was a dedicated mom, grandmother, and aunt who always supported those near and far, and whose legacy will continue to live on beyond her kids, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martha (George) and Alfred “Pops” Barbour; her sidekick and nephew, Kendale Dyer; and two very precious grandchildren, Zola-Rain Barbour and Caleb “Chunka” Strickler.

She is survived by her children Shakita Barbour (Davey), Crystal Barbour, Kristie Barbour (Caleb),and Kara Barbour (Gerryn). Her grandchildren Vakirah “Kammy” Barbour, Haliah Barbour, Hoven Barbour, Keturah “KK” Barbour-Reynolds (Jack), Tical Brackett, Malik Frye, Laveah Strickler, Gunnar Strickler, and Korryn Stoot; great-grandchildren Haven and Madyn Reynolds. Her siblings Katherine “Kaffa" Barbour, Patricia “Jean" Barbour, Stanley “Greasy" Barbour (Lesjane), Theodore “Theo” Barbour (Connie), Debbie Barbour, Gregory Barbour (Sue), Kenneth “KB" Barbour, Christopher Barbour (Nancy), Franklin “Frank" Barbour, Sheila Barbour-Avery, Cornell “Chubby” Barbour (Melinda), and Garnett Barbour (Tracy). Lastly, she had many nieces and nephews, as well as special friends, throughout her life.

Family and friends will be received on Thursday, September 3rd at Teague Funeral Home from 5-8 pm. Funeral services will take place on Friday, September 4th at Crozet Baptist Church at 11 am, with a graveside burial to follow at Piedmont Baptist Church. A repast will take place following the graveside burial at Crozet Baptist Church until 3 pm.

The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the staff, doctors, and nurses at the Intensive Care Unit at the University of Virginia Medical Center. A very special thank you to nurses Emily and Carson for their dedication and care for Carolyn in the final moments of her life.

Her beautiful smile will live on forever in our hearts. Her spirit is in heaven watching a Commanders game with Kendale, eating a delicious meal with Zola-Rain, and bouncing Chunka on her lap in the presence of the Lord.
