Graduated from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland with an Honours M.A. (First Class) in Anglo-Saxon and Medieval Studies and an M.Litt.
Journeyed to the United States as a Kennedy Fellow at Harvard University, 1971-73.
Worked as Director of Cultural Affairs for the City of Philadelphia, serving as bicentennial liaison officer at the British Embassy in Washington, D.C.
Worked at Carnegie Corporation of New York from 1992-2007, chairing programs in international peace and security and engagement with the Islamic world.
Served as founder and director of the U.S. Global Engagement program at the Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs, and as a senior fellow at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
Founding member of the American Committee for East-West Accord, and member of the Council on Foreign Relations.
Devoted husband to Evelyn (died in October 2016), father to Sam, father-in-law to Beatrix, grandfather to Ilsa, and brother to Denis (of Dundee), Alan (of Stirling), and their families.
A lifelong fan of Glasgow Rangers and Arsenal F.C., he took pleasure in teaching “the beautiful game” to his son, granddaughter and their peers.
Valued and beloved by his many friends spread far and wide for his wit, wisdom, intellectual acumen, care and compassion.
He is dearly missed.
