April 4, 1956 – October 21, 2026
Deborah Sue Ballowe, 70, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away peacefully at home on October 21, 2026, surrounded by her loved ones.
Born on April 4, 1956, in Browns Cove, Virginia, Debbie was the daughter of the late Violet Marie Ralston and Russell Davis. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her
aunt, Lillie Shifflett, who held a special place in her heart and was like a mother, and her dear nephew, Weston Herndon.
Known affectionately as Debbie, Mom, Nanny, BB, and Ballowe she was a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, and cousin whose greatest joy came from the people closest to her. She had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome, no matter who they were. Those who knew Debbie will remember her warm heart, generous spirit, and the way she could make people feel at home.
Debbie leaves behind her soulmate and best friend of 40 years, Roger Lee Ferguson of Charlottesville, Virginia. They shared many years of laughter, companionship, and memories,
building a life together that was truly special. Roger was by her side through all of life’s ups and downs, and the bond they shared was one of a kind.
Debbie enjoyed the simple things in life. She loved bluegrass music and dancing along to her favorite tunes, spending time in her rose garden while watching the birds, playing a game of
Rummy, and cheering on her Dallas Cowboys. She was also known for her cooking, especially her much-loved macaroni and cheese that she brought to family gatherings. Throughout her younger years, Debbie worked in retail and as a caregiver in the health system. Her compassionate heart and caring nature made her a natural fit for the role.
Above all, Debbie treasured her family. She is survived by her only child and best friend, Chasity Hite, and her husband, Dallas Hite, of Crozet, Virginia. Her greatest blessings were her two beloved grandchildren, Conner Hite, her “star,” and Lilly Hite, her precious “baby girl.” They held an especially important place in her life, and being their Nanny was her greatest joy.
She loved spending time with her girls; Megan, Dee, Courtney, and Channin, and their babies, who always brought a smile to her face. Their love and visits meant so much to Debbie, and
during this time they were truly her best medicine.
Debbie is survived by her sisters, Donna Rice (Gary) and Wanda Knight (Jay), and her brother, Willie Ralston (Sheila), all of Crozet, Virginia. Debbie also leaves behind special cousins Betty Shifflett and Anna Pritchet; a cousin whom she considered a sister, Carolyn Massey, known as her “Sissy Girl”; her longtime friend and neighbor, Sharon McGill; her brother-in-law, RD Dunning; and a host of beloved cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish her memory.
Debbie’s memory will live on through the stories shared, the traditions carried on, and the countless moments her family and friends will always remember. Though she will be deeply
missed, the laughter she brought into a room and the warmth she shared with others will never be forgotten.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Hospice of the Piedmont, especially Nurse Nina, for the compassion, kindness, and loving care they provided to Debbie over the last eight months. Their support and dedication during this time meant so much to Debbie and her family, and they will always be grateful for the comfort and care they brought to her.
A service celebrating Debbie’s life will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Mount Moriah Church, 4492 Garth Road, Charlottesville, Virginia. A luncheon will be provided following the service. Family and friends are invited to gather, share memories, and celebrate her life.
Forever loved to the moon and back
