The sixth of seven children, Don was born in Quincy, Illinois, and raised in Dallas, Texas.
Don graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas, Texas, and went on to pursue his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas and graduate school in engineering at Arizona State University (ASU).
After graduating from ASU and completing Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, Don proudly served his country from 1967 to 1969 as a U.S. Navy officer aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), the first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
Following his time in the Navy, Don moved to New York City to work for Citibank. It was there that he met his wife-to-be, Elizabeth Carole, whom he married in 1970. The newlyweds moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Don pursued additional studies at ASU, and then to Charlottesville, Virginia, where Don completed his A.B.D. in economics at the University of Virginia (UVA) and where they proudly welcomed their daughter, Audrey Elizabeth.
Don and Carole raised their daughter in Madison, New Jersey, a place they called home for 25 years. Work then took them to Atlanta, Georgia, for 10 years, and in 2009, they retired to Keswick, Virginia, not far from the Grounds of the University of Virginia.
Don built a distinguished career as an economist and investment professional, focusing on international investing and portfolio management. He held roles at White, Weld; Prudential; Haroz Ltd.; and with the States of New Jersey and Georgia. He carried his love of investing into retirement and was always ready to share his market outlook and thoughtful recommendations. He also gave generously of his time volunteering at Sentara Hospital and in local elementary schools.
Don found particular joy on the tennis court, in his baseball card collection, cheering on the Dallas Cowboys, and in time spent with his family—especially his granddaughter. He also held a special place in his heart for his Dalmatians—Admiral, Omega, Pie, Lily, and Alice—who were treasured members of his family.
Don is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Elizabeth Carole Haroz of Keswick, Virginia; his daughter, Audrey Haroz Reed of Washington, D.C.; and his cherished granddaughter, Charlotte Claire Reed of Washington, D.C. He is also survived by his sisters, Charlotte Renne of Denver, Colorado, and Mary Tamm of Holmdel, New Jersey; his brother, Mike (Betsy) Haroz of Cambridge, Massachusetts; and many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews across the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander and Marguerite Haroz of Dallas, Texas; his brothers, Richard K. Haroz of Geneva, Switzerland, and Colonel Carl Thomas Haroz of Albuquerque,
New Mexico (and his wife, Judy); his sister, Alexandria (Sandra) Louise Rose of Midland, Texas; and his brothers-in-law, Manfred Tamm of Princeton, New Jersey, and Chuck Renne of Denver, Colorado.
He will be remembered for his quick wit, keen intellect, and generous spirit. Above all, Don loved his family and found his greatest happiness with them. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all whose lives he touched.
