Duanne Davidson Carter

Duanne Davidson Carter, 85, of Charlottesville, died unexpectedly on Monday, November 23, 2015, surrounded by her family at the University of Virginia Hospital. Born to Edna Davidson on May 2, 1930, she spent her childhood in Villamont, Virginia where she cherished being part of a family farm operating since the 1730s. In 1950, Duanne married William Carter despite his Montvale High School superlative, “the Biggest Pest.” Together they raised a family beyond the suburban frontier of Charlottesville. Throughout her life, Duanne expressed a great love of nature and compassion towards others. While her children often heard comments about their mother’s beauty, her true beauty was found in her grace and kindness. Her wonderment and joy for life and learning remained constant, and her creativity and imagination never stopped. These gifts, given by God, were used wisely and appreciated fully, and in God’s image she loved. Duanne was predeceased by her husband, William Carter; and her infant granddaughter, Christine O’Leary. Duanne was the last member of the Davidson family of Villamont. She leaves behind her son, Christopher Carter and his wife, Tuck, of Charlottesville; and daughters, Leslie O’Leary and husband, Dennis, also of Charlottesville, Mayo Carter of Fredericksburg, Va., and Taryn Whitlark and her husband, Forrest, of Columbia, S.C. Fondly known as Grandu, Duanne’s legacy includes nine grandchildren, Megan, Will and his wife Carrie, Weyman and his wife Kristen, Meredith, Maggie and her husband, Casey, Dennis, Viva, Thomas, and Brie. She also leaves six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Dilyn, Wyatt, Weyman, Caroline, and Greyson. Grandu looked forward to the births of two more little ones in the upcoming months. The Carter family would like to thank Dr. Devon Lowdon and his staff for their excellent care, and her special caregivers at Westminster Canterbury. A funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2015, in the chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 500 Park Street in Charlottesville. Interment will follow at Monticello Memorial Gardens.
