Howard Arthur Pape

January 23, 1953February 28, 2016

Howard Arthur Pape, 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, February 28, 2016. Born on January 23, 1953 in New Jersey he was a son of Doris Subin Pape and the late Irving Eugene Pape. Howard is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Karen Duncan Pape; sons, Jeremy Pape and his wife Tricia Del Sorbo of Brooklyn, New York and Evan Pape and his wife Shelby Roberts of Atlanta, Georgia; his much beloved grandsons, Elliot and Owen; brothers, Stuart and Neal Pape; and, a host of family and friends who will deeply miss him. He also leaves an adopted son Denis Mervil of Fort Liberte, Haiti. Howard attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1975 with a focus on psychology. He created a successful business at Central Virginia Waterproofing, but his true passion was people and helping others. Early on, he coached youth soccer for 11 years. He then went on to co-found Building Goodness Foundation, traveling to Haiti more than 20 times and developing a deep love and respect for the people there. Additionally, he volunteered in many capacities at Live Arts, where most recently he was happily building sets. He volunteered for Habitat, AHIP, and anyone who called out for him, and he was always, always there for his friends. Our Howard was a poet and philosopher, and he wrote “We cannot determine, when we throw a pebble in the water, where or what the ripples will become. I do not know the outcomes of the ripples I have made, but I choose, at my best, to toss smooth pebbles into still, clear water.” Our dear Howard did just that.

Howard remains one of the truly nicest people I’ve ever known. We grew up as neighbors and became fast friends. I’ll miss him forever.

Dear Karen,
We were heartbroken to hear about Howard. He was and always will be on my shortlist of heroes. Pearlington will always have a special place in my heart because the town's problems provided me with the opportunity to meet and work with your wonderful husband. And eventually I got to meet "Karen" whom he was constantly talking about with great affection and pride. Then off to Haiti to work with you both and Leon Pamphile. Elliot and I have you and your family in our thoughts. I feel so lucky to have had what little time was given me to get to know what a really great man is like. Love to you, Lenore and Elliot

Karen and family,
I just read in the C'ville about Howard having passed. What a tremendous loss !
I remember your visits to our Double H Farm tent and how much Howard and Richard enjoyed each other. Politics and sports were their favorite conversations.
Although I haven't seen you in years, you were not a couple to forget.
My sympathy to you and your family. Jean Rinaldi (formally of Double H Farm).

I am so sorry to hear of Howard's passing. I have known Howard for many years but have not had the good fortune to see him very often. Even so, he was one of my favorite people on the planet to see and I always felt very close to him when we met. He had a beautiful quality of loving, humorous warmth and connection. My condolences to Karen and the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Howard's passing. Howard was my soccer coach for several years and proved to be a great role model for all the kids on the team. I'm saddened that someone who had such a positive impact on me has been lost so soon. I wish the best for Mrs. Pape, Evan and JD during this difficult time.
