Howard Arthur Pape, 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, February 28, 2016.
Born on January 23, 1953 in New Jersey he was a son of Doris Subin Pape and the late Irving Eugene Pape.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 38 years Karen Duncan Pape; sons, Jeremy Pape and his wife Tricia Del Sorbo of Brooklyn, New York and Evan Pape and his wife Shelby Roberts of Atlanta, Georgia; his much beloved grandsons, Elliot and Owen; brothers, Stuart and Neal Pape; and, a host of family and friends who will deeply miss him. He also leaves an adopted son Denis Mervil of Fort Liberte, Haiti.
Howard attended the University of Virginia and graduated in 1975 with a focus on psychology. He created a successful business at Central Virginia Waterproofing, but his true passion was people and helping others. Early on, he coached youth soccer for 11 years. He then went on to co-found Building Goodness Foundation, traveling to Haiti more than 20 times and developing a deep love and respect for the people there. Additionally, he volunteered in many capacities at Live Arts, where most recently he was happily building sets. He volunteered for Habitat, AHIP, and anyone who called out for him, and he was always, always there for his friends.
Our Howard was a poet and philosopher, and he wrote “We cannot determine, when we throw a pebble in the water, where or what the ripples will become. I do not know the outcomes of the ripples I have made, but I choose, at my best, to toss smooth pebbles into still, clear water.” Our dear Howard did just that.
