Born on June 27, 1948, Janice grew up in College Park, Maryland. It was there, during her school days, that she first met her future husband, Dennis. Years later, while Dennis was serving on active duty overseas, the two rekindled their romance through heartfelt letters. They were married in 1970, began a family together, and moved to Charlottesville in 1979.
Deeply rooted in her faith and community, Janice pursued her passions with boundless energy. She volunteered her time at the UVA Hospital and the Paramount Theater and balanced a diverse professional life as an Au Pair coordinator, a travel agent, and the bookkeeper for her husband’s engineering firm. Guided by their shared faith, Dennis and Janice also dedicated themselves to ministry together through Marriage Encounter, Cursillo, and Pre-Cana.
Janice also lived life with an adventurous spirit and a deep love for the world around her. An avid traveler, she explored the West Coast, Hawaii, Alaska, and numerous European countries. Yet, she found equal joy in simpler pleasures closer to home: catching the sunset on Skyline Drive, walking along the beach, listening to live music at local vineyards, and especially sharing annual family trips to the Outer Banks.
Proving that it is never too late to learn, Janice completed her college education in her 40s. She went on to share her voice with the world, writing for several travel magazines and authoring a book reflecting on her life in the 1960s. She also remained an active member of local writing clubs and various travel organizations.
Janice was preceded in death by her father, Robert Kirby; her mother, Marge Kirby; and her brother, Patrick Kirby.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion, survived by her husband of 56 years, Dennis; her son, Tony; her daughter, Amy, and her husband, Rick; and her three beloved grandchildren, Caroline (Mike), Cole (Brenda), and Miles. She is also survived by her brother, Robert (Carolyn); her sisters, Julie (Bill) and Lynne; and many nieces and nephews.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the nurses, staff, and administration at Our Lady of Peace for the exceptional care, kindness, and compassion shown to Janice over the last 10 years.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Janice's life at the Church of the Incarnation on Friday, October 30, 2026. A gathering will begin at 11:00 AM, followed by a Memorial Mass at 12:15 PM and a reception on the church premises.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association.
