

John was born in December 1944 in Waverly, Iowa, to Mildred E. Hartwig and Christian “Bing” G. Mohn. He was raised on his family’s farm in Shell Rock, Iowa, and graduated from Waverly-Shell Rock High School in 1963. He went on to attend Iowa State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1968. Following his graduation, John attended U.S. Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island, and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in May 1969.
He served his country with honor and distinction for 20 years as a Surface Warfare Officer (SWO). During his Navy career, he served on the: USS IREDELL COUNTY (LST-839), USS CORONADO (LPD-11), USS ALBERT DAVID (DE-1050), USS PELELIU (LHA-5), and various Shore Duty assignments. He attended the U.S. Destroyer School in Newport, RI, and earned his Master of Business Administration degree from National University. John retired from active duty in 1989 with the rank of Commander.
After his military service, he began a second career in government contracting in the Washington, D.C. area. He resided in Fairfax, Virginia, for 34 years before relocating to Charlottesville in 2017 with his wife to be closer to their daughters and grandchildren.
John is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Janice M. Mohn; his two daughters, Carrington E. Crabbe and husband Alan, and Christina M. Schauder and husband Bryan, all of Charlottesville, VA; his cherished grandchildren, Ava R. Schauder, Wesley M. Schauder, Brindley E. Crabbe, and Hayden J. Crabbe, all of Charlottesville; and his brother, Richard C. Mohn of Clarksville, Iowa.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy RD, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery in the fall of 2026.
