From the very beginning, “Lukey Duke” was the happiest of babies. He loved snuggling, laughing at his siblings, and simply soaking in the world around him. Sweet Luke brought joy wherever he went, cooing and babbling with the most precious little smile. As he grew from a baby into a toddler and then a little boy, his gift for making people smile never faded. He was eager to please, quick to laugh, and happiest when he could make someone else laugh with him.

Luke faced challenges that most people will never know, but he never gave up on himself. For years, he worked tirelessly to relearn skills and gain new abilities, meeting each challenge with a determination far greater than his little frame. His journey was shared so that others could witness not only Luke’s extraordinary strength, but also the extraordinary work of God throughout his life. His grit and resilience inspired those who knew him personally and countless others who simply knew his story.

Luke was a determined little boy who loved a good snack and would work awfully hard to get one. He loved cuddling, holding hands, and spending hours on his front porch, soaking up the sunshine and watching the birds fly. He loved Ed Sheeran, worship music, and Paw Patrol. Luke loved going to school and had built unbreakable bonds with his amazing teacher, instructional aid, and his classmates. Luke spent hours at the Richmond Hope Therapy Center, Total Wellness Clinic, and NeuroActive Spine and Rehab Center working hard alongside his incredible medical team to build upon the miracle of his recovery. Although it was hard work, he never missed a chance to laugh, be mischievous, and sneak in a sweet hug. On Sunday mornings you would often catch Luke cruising back to Kids Point, clapping and giggling along with his peers and instructors as they learned about the goodness of God. Luke loved his community, especially his special little friends in his neighborhood and church who intentionally sought out ways to get to know Luke, include Luke, and meet Luke where he was. They blessed Luke with friendship and kindness in the most beautiful of ways.

But more than anything, Luke loved his family.

He adored his “Big Three” siblings, Bayleigh, Devin, and Ethan; his mama, Ashley; and his hero and very best friend in the whole world, his daddy, Joel. Luke was loved deeply by his Aunties, Uncles, Nanny, Grandparents, Great Grandparents, even a great-great grandparent, Great Aunts and Uncles, and numerous cousins. Family mattered, and Luke never missed out on a chance to spend time with his big, beautiful family.

Luke’s family dedicated themselves completely to supporting him throughout his recovery and his life. Late nights and early mornings. Hospital stays and therapy appointments. Cross-country trips, procedures, equipment, and countless hours spent learning, advocating, encouraging, and believing. These were only some of the sacrifices that came with loving and caring for a child with special needs, and his family would tell you that every single one was worth it.

Despite the odds placed before him, Luke overcame.

His miracles reached throughout his community and far beyond it. On April 19, 2026, Luke boldly proclaimed his love for Jesus when he was baptized alongside his father. Through Luke and his family’s faith, many came to witness and know the love of Christ in a deeper way.

Luke’s story of recovery, perseverance, and faith inspired thousands and earned him the nickname “Luke the Little But Mighty.”

But the people who knew him best, simply called him “Bugs.”

To know Luke was to know love.

His smile and twinkling eyes could light even the darkest spaces. His sweet giggles could mend broken hearts and lift the spirits of everyone around him. His strength and determination inspired hope. His joyful spirit reached people and places this sweet boy would never know.

The love poured over Luke, and the love that poured out of him, taught others something even greater: to love like Luke, love like Jesus, and love unconditionally.

There will never be enough words to capture the incredible impact Luke made during his 11 years on this earth. His life cannot be measured simply by the number of years he was here, but by the lives he touched, the hearts he changed, the faith he strengthened, and the love he leaves behind.

Luke’s life and legacy have forever changed the paths of those who knew and loved him, and his impact will continue through generations to come.

Luke’s family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the incredible teams at the UVA Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Richmond Hope Therapy Center, Total Wellness Clinic, and Neuroactive Spine & Rehab Center for the many ways they contributed to Luke’s journey and cared for this sweet boy.

They are also profoundly grateful to the educators, administrators, and support staff of Louisa County Public Schools for the extraordinary love, encouragement, accommodations, and support they continually provided Luke.

To The Point Church, thank you for loving Luke so completely and for including him in the life of the church in the holiest and most meaningful of ways.

Finally, Luke’s family extends its deepest gratitude to every member of Luke’s village, those who championed him, prayed for him, celebrated his victories, carried his family through difficult days, and cheered him on both near and far. Your prayers, generosity, love, and support have been provisions throughout this journey, and Luke’s family will carry that love with them always.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Luke’s legacy by helping create something that reflects the way he lived: a place where every person belongs.

For those who are able and feel called to give, donations may be made in Luke’s honor toward the design and installation of a fully inclusive playground in Luke's community (Louisa, VA), creating a place where children of all abilities can play, laugh, explore, and experience the joy of simply being a child.
