Martha Randolph Huffman Wood, of Charlottesville/Crozet, born on November 8, 1936, passed away quietly, peacefully and on her own terms, on August 20, 2025. She has embarked on the greatest adventure ever in the hands of her professed lord and savior, Jesus Christ and her beloved husband Eldon Fields Wood. Martha’s memory will be lovingly cherished by her only child Elizabeth “Liz” Wood and her sister Lilchy Huffman. Martha’s five grandchildren, Taylor Henley, Lindsey Henley, Dillon-Ray Henley, Wyatt Henley, and Sydney Henley—and three beloved great-grandchildren, Virginia June, Zoey Nix, and Hudson-Ray will never forget how great a woman she was. Martha’s wanderlust was born from her Air Force daughter upbringing. As an adult she was always planning the next great trip. She was fortunate enough to see most of the world’s greatest architecture, art, and natural wonders. She was a career educator whose passion for teaching spanned many years in Stafford County, Fairfax County, and Albemarle County schools. Her commitment to education grew beyond the classroom. As a lifetime member and leader within the National Education Association, Virginia Education Association, and Albemarle Education Association, Martha’s advocacy and tireless devotion was an inspiration for educators everywhere. An active member of University Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Martha held numerous leadership roles and was a devoted supporter of the church’s Jubilate Choir. Her heart for service extended into her community by volunteering countless hours with the Alliance of Interfaith Ministries and the Albemarle Democratic Party, among many others. Her zest for life and unwavering dedication to human rights and justice touched the lives of many. A Celebration of Life honoring Martha will be held on September 6 at University Baptist Church in Charlottesville. Visitation will take place from 10:00 to 11:30 AM, followed by a service at 11:30 AM and a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the National Parks Foundation, Alliance for Interfaith Ministries, the National Civil Liberties Union, and the NEA Foundation for the Improvement of Education. Her family asks that all who knew her, practice random acts of kindness in her memory. Martha will be remembered for her spark, drive, and deep care for all those around her. Her legacy of love, service, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her.
