Mary John Smith of Charlottesville, Virginia died on June 21, 2025 at the age of 82. Born on February 20, 1943 in Covington County, Alabama, Mary John was the only child of John D. and Claudia L. Smith. After graduating from Elba, Alabama High School, she received B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Alabama, a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, and a law degree from the University of Virginia, after which she practiced law in Charlottesville for over 30 years.
Mary John's remains will be interred in a family cemetery in Alabama. No funeral or other memorial service is planned. Should any of Mary John’s friends care to celebrate her life, she left a request that a donation be made to any organization, the mission of which is the rescue and care of neglected or abused animals.
