Nancy Foster Corwith

Nancy Foster Corwith,78, of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on November 12, 2023, at University of Virginia Hospital. She was surrounded by her son Zack and several close friends. Nancy was born February 28, 1945, in Kinston, NC to Foster Howell Corwith and Ruth Odelle Hudson Corwith. She is survived by her son, Zachary Corwith Hurr, her sister Jane Hudson Corwith, her brother Foster Howell Corwith II and his children. Nancy grew up in Southampton, NY where she graduated as valedictorian of Southampton High School class of 1963. She completed her undergraduate degree in French Studies and Master’s degree in Middle School Education at The University of North Carolina. Nancy lived and worked in New York City, Paris, and Juneau before moving to Boone, NC where she taught middle school science. In Boone, Nancy met and married William Douglas Hurr, their travels would take them around the world. In recent years, she and her sister maintained their love for adventure by traveling together in the US and abroad. Nancy lived a rich life filled with meaningful friendships, but, by far, her connection with Zack was most precious. Whether it was the years living on their sailboat, traveling the eastern seaboard or watching her dogs run in the mountains of Virginia, Zack’s presence made these treasured moments in her life. Nancy joined the staff of University Montessori School (UMS) in 1995 where she was eager to share her interest for science and nature with her students. Nancy was a skillful teacher who filled the classroom with a calm, insightful presence. She was adored by students, parents, and the staff at UMS. Her students were excited about learning because Nancy possessed an innate ability to reach each student through their unique learning style. Nancy brought into the classroom a never ending patience, love, and gentleness. Nancy was selfless with her time and volunteered by teaching English as a Second Language and at Building Goodness Foundation, going as far as Honduras to help construct community housing. With compassion and positivity as inherent strengths, and a desire to see the world, Nancy’s life was full of happiness and joy, so abundant in these traits that she could share them with all those around her. We will gather for a Celebration of Life to be held at 2:00 on December 10th, at Crozet United Methodist Church in the fellowship hall, 1156 Crozet Avenue, Crozet, VA.
