

She was born on September 25, 1935, to the late Reuben Stark Melton and Mary Davis Melton Blackman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis E. Harmon Jr.; her brothers Hunter, Reuben, Bernard and Charles Melton; along with her sisters Frances Mitchell, Mildred, “Mickey” Tapscott and Sally Lively.
Phyllis was a member of Hillsboro Baptist Church, Yancey Mills, Virginia. She worked as a teacher's aid at Brownsville Elementary School and at the University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Sciences for 20 years, retiring in 2000. She was last employed at the Hillsboro Baptist Christian Preschool.
She is survived by her children, Debbie Claytor and her husband Larry of Greenwood and Lew Harmon and his wife Maggie of Crozet. Phyllis, affectionately known as “Mee Maw” is also survived by her grandchildren; Michael (Mandy), Chris (Jess) and Jon Claytor (Kim) and Megan Harmon Barnes (Kyle). She is also survived by four great grandchildren; Darcy and Connor Claytor and Josie and Ellie Barnes.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to the doctors and nurses in charge of her care at the Martha Jefferson Hospital, Cornell 2 care unit.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, November 15, 2021, at 2pm, at Mooreland Baptist Church Cemetery, 2255 Taylors Gap Rd, North Garden, VA 22959.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hillsboro Baptist Preschool, 6356 Hillsboro Lane, Crozet, VA 22932.
