Robert Cary Coleman, 71, died at home in Charlottesville on July 20, 2018. Cary was born October 25, 1946 in Richmond, Virginia, the youngest of three children of William Eugene Coleman and Louise Frances Coleman (nee Mattern). He attended Richmond public schools and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1964. He graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was an Echols Scholar, in 1968. Cary worked at Alderman Library starting in 1964 as an undergraduate (he was one of “Mrs. Rockett’s boys”) and then in professional positions until his retirement December 31, 2013.
He is survived by his spouse and partner of 28 years, Edward F. Gaynor, Jr.; nieces and nephews Kathleen Thomas, William Coleman, Stephen Coleman (all of Richmond); Lisa Coleman (of Boseman, Montana); John Coleman (of Hampton, New Jersey); Anne Barnwell (of Little Rock, Arkansas); and Charles Coleman (of Conway, Arkansas); a number of great-nieces and great-nephews; and many friends across the country.
At Cary’s request, there will be a private burial at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond and no memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Cary’s memory to an organization of one’s choosing would be welcome.
