

Shirley Temple Armstrong, or “Nan” as she was known by friends and family alike, passed away peacefully in her home on Friday, March 25, 2016. She was born on May 16, 1939 to the late Denver and Nora Simmons. She was the beloved wife of the late William Robert Armstrong.
Nan was the strongest woman we know, and she was a fighter to the end. She was committed to her family, whom she loved deeply. She was always thinking of others, and she will be missed dearly.
Shirley is survived by her three daughters: Vickie Botkin, Peggy Vandevander, and Donna Reed; one son: Bobby Armstrong; one brother: Ralph Simmons; one sister: Leona Crummett; four grandchildren: C.J. Vandevander, W.R. Vandevander, Robbie Armstrong, and Sara Mills; nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. She also leaves her beloved dog Miss Daisy, who was her companion for 15 years.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by two sisters: Louise Rexrode and Pauline Botkin; one brother: Lewis Simmons; and one granddaughter: Christie Botkin.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 PM on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Rd., Charlottesville, VA 22903. The family will receive friends one hour prior, and the burial will be held afterwards at Monticello Memory Gardens.
