Shirley Jean Ehrhardt

Shirley Jean Ehrhardt, 86, of Charlottesville, transitioned peacefully into eternal rest on Wednesday, January 24, 2024; and into the loving arms of her heavenly father, after battling dementia. Shirley a native to Albemarle County, was born on April 17, 1937, to the late David and Elsie Pearl Bennett Shiflett of Boonesville, Va.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Ehrhardt, and sisters Margaret Marie and Lucille Mildred Clermont; two brothers, David Shiflett, and Vernon Clyde “Bootsie” Shiflett. Shirley leaves behind her beloved daughter Denise Elaine Vurnakes Stewart (Charlottesville) and her three grandsons JP Stewart (Manassas), Sam Stewart and Nick Stewart (Charlottesville) that brought so much joy to her life and would light up when they visited. She is also survived by her loving family: two sisters, Vernell Davidson, Violet Talley, and one brother Eddie Shiflett (Brenda) and 5 nieces and 4 nephews. Gary Shiflett, Kevin Shiflett, Maria Besseas, Rhonda Jones (Jack), Rory Shifflett, Lisa Farr, Jeffrey Birckhead (Selena), Lori Young (Greg) and Alexis Powell (Jody).

Shirley was a stranger to no one, full of energy, life and had a strong faith in the Lord. Through the years, she enjoyed running her thrift and consignment business “Twice Is Nice” for 35 years; after assuming the store from her sister. She was devoted to the community and several organizations most notably Jefferson Area Board on Aging JABA her charity. During her years at “Twice is Nice” Shirley was recognized for numerous financial donations to JABA and after her illness donated Twice is Nice to JABA. In retirement, she enjoyed watching television ministries, singing along to the hymns and gospels; especially her favorites “Working on a Building” and “Amazing Grace” and spending time with her family and friends and talking with them on the phone. Shirley also supported various philanthropic organizations that were close to her heart. Memorial Sloan Kettering, Veterans causes, Televised and local Ministries, and Higher Educational Institutions. She also had a comical nature, and we lovingly recall her devotion to cleanliness, so much so that she’d follow her young grandchildren around, when visiting, to make sure they didn’t “spill” anything on the carpets (with carpet cleaner in hand). This would always bring a smile to our faces. She loved to cook and entertained large groups at her annual Christmas Party. They were memorable and everyone enjoyed the outstanding musical entertainment and of course… the food. Just like her daughter, Shirley collected quotes and one of Shirley’s favorite quotes was “ Be careful of the words you speak, make them soft and sweet, you’ll never know which ones you’ll have to eat”.

In keeping with her wishes, a private graveside service will take place for the family at Holly Memorial Gardens. A celebration of her life will be scheduled at a later date. Shirley will be greatly missed by her daughter, grandchildren, siblings and all of the extended family. She was a great and thoughtful aunt who always made sure there was a birthday cake and celebration when needed. We are thankful for the additional time Shirley had on this earth and know that she is joyfully celebrating with her family in Heaven and our Lord, Jesus Christ, whom she loved dearly.
