Steven Craig Camp Sr.

Steven Craig Camp Sr., 77, of Palmyra, Virginia, was called home to the Lord on September 7, 2026. Born March 17, 1949, Steven lived a life marked by steady devotion to family, faithful service, and a quiet ability to leave a lasting imprint on those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Steven is survived by his loving wife of 26 years, Vicky; his children, Steven C. Camp, Jr. and his wife Candice Camp, Jamie Dawn Camp and her husband Robert Crowe, Edward Lee Shifflett, Jr., and Angela Nicole Shifflett; his grandchildren, Ryan James Camp, Philip Christian Crowe, Robert James Scardami, III, and Jackson Reid Camp; and his brother, Jeffery Neil Camp, Sr. and his wife, Melissa Camp.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward Camp, Sr. and Verna Southworth Camp; his brother, James “Bull” Edward Camp, Jr.; and his sister, Carol Lynn Camp.

Steven grew up in the East End of Henrico, where time spent with his older brother and cousins helped kindle a lifelong love of the outdoors. While others rode bikes to ball fields, Steven and his cousins were drawn to creeks and ponds—an early passion that would become a defining thread throughout his life. After graduating from Henrico High School in 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1967 to 1971, spending much of that time aboard submarines. Among the memories he most cherished and often shared was the day his submarine broke through the ice at the North Pole, where he and his crewmates planted a Virginia flag into the ice.

Upon returning home, Steven pursued a career in Heating and Air Conditioning, dedicating more than 40 years to the trade in both residential and commercial work. He retired from Southern Air in 2010, yet retirement did not lessen his commitment to teaching and mentorship. He continued instructing Heating and Air Conditioning at CaTech in Charlottesville, teaching many students over 30 years and sharing not only practical knowledge, but also the stories and wisdom gathered through a life well lived—often accompanied by a well-timed fishing tale.

Steven found deep joy in fishing with his wife, his brother, his son, and many friends and family members. He took genuine pride in teaching others and introducing them to the outdoors, and he was especially gifted at sparking that same enduring passion in those around him. At home, he treasured time with family, often gathered around the television—whether it was Perry Mason, Star Trek, fishing programs, or anything on the History Channel. His soundtrack included favorites like the Doors and Hootie and the Blowfish.

Steven spent his lifetime making a mark in so many lives. He is loved and will be missed by many. His family extends heartfelt gratitude to his hospice team for their care over the last two weeks.

Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life on Tuesday, September 15, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Teague Funeral Home, 2260 Ivy Road, Charlottesville, VA.
