Terry Scott Beard was born on September 4, 1939 in Portsmouth, Virginia to George Scott Boylan and Lois Carol (formerly Willis). She was raised by Robert Gayle and Lois Willis Lowe. A significant part of her life was spent in Gloucester, NC, "down home" on the Straits. It was there that she passed on her love of sunsets, seafood, front porches, dolphins, story telling, and egrets to her children. Family history was so important to Terry and she enjoyed hearing the oral history of Carteret County.
Terry was a 1957 graduate of Morehead City High School where she was a majorette. It was there that she met her husband of 57 years, Charles Edward Beard. They were married on July 16, 1957 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Morehead City, North Carolina.
Terry graduated from Salisbury State University after raising her 5 children, obtaining a degree in Social Work. She worked for the State of Maryland in Crisfield, MD as an Alcohol Addiction Counselor.
After taking 14 years of ballet, Terry volunteered her time at the local rec center, teaching ballet to the local children when her husband was on tours in Vietnam. Terry also spent time volunteering at Contact Peninsula, a suicide prevention center in Newport News, VA back in the early 80s. Terry was an advocate for saving our planet, social justice, and democracy. She and her late husband spent countless hours registering people to vote and working the polls.
She is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her sister, Wendy Malvin, brother, Dr. Jon B. Lowe, and her son in law, Joseph M. Hollowell, Jr.
She is survived by her children, Julie Hollowell, Norfolk, VA, Lisa Hall (Jon) Annapolis, MD, Charles Beard, Jr. (Donna) Lakewood Ranch, FL, Scott Beard (Andrea) Greer, SC, and Jon Beard, Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; grandchildren Megan Skeens (Bobby), Bryan Davis (Stacie), Alison Todd (Andrew), Erica Snook (Mike), Caroline Beard, Nate Hall (Africa), Chase Beard (Katie), Madeline Dove, Hunter Beard, Olivia Edwards (Will), Hannah Hall (Franklin), Colin, Landon, and Ella Beard; and great-grandchildren Katharyn, Ainsley, Rebecca, Luca, Fiona, Nico, Maeve, and Margot.
A Holy Eucharist will be held Saturday, Dec 13, 2025 at 11 am at Christ & St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 560 W Olney Rd. Norfolk, VA 23507 and officiated by The Rev. Noah Van Niel.
