Thomas Eddie McRay

Tom, affectionately known to his family as "Baloo," passed away peacefully on September 21, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer, in the comfort of his own home surrounded by his loved ones. Born on March 28, 1959, in Charlottesville, Tom was a cherished soul who left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Tom was the beloved son of James Edward and Edith Irene, who predeceased him, along with his brothers James Edward Jr. and Wayne Dabney. He is survived by his devoted wife of 32 years, Angie, with whom he shared an unbreakable bond of love and companionship. Together, they raised two sons, Ian and Cole, who were the pride of Tom's life. Ian, his wife Niki, and their three children, Ethan, George, and Lily, remember him fondly as their loving father and grandfather. Cole, alongside his partner Bryn Nelson, will forever cherish the memories of their time together.

Tom's family also includes his dear sister Sue Ballard, her husband Stan, and their children Danielle and Matt, who all held a special place in his heart. The family extends a heartfelt thank you to his nephew Ryan Morris, nieces Makayla Morris, and Danielle Lert for their endless love, care and support during his final days.

Tom dedicated 40 years of his life to the University of Virginia, where he worked as a supervisor for facilities management. His dedication and commitment to his work reflected the pride he felt in being part of an institution he greatly admired.

An avid outdoorsman, Tom found joy and solace in nature. He never missed the opening day of hunting season and could often be found casting his line in Virginia's streams. Yet his greatest joy was sharing these passions with his sons and grandchildren. Teaching them the ways of the outdoors was not just a pastime, but a legacy he passed down with great pride.

Known for his quick wit, warm presence, and playful spirit, Tom had a unique way of showing affection through light-hearted teasing. His burly stature and goofy personality endeared him to his family and friends, earning him the nickname "Baloo." To his grandchildren, he wasn't just a grandfather; he was their beloved Baloo, a figure of fun, warmth, and endless love.

A service to honor and celebrate Tom's life will be held on September 28, 2026, at 2:00 PM at Legacy Church, located at 85 Summit View Dr, Ruckersville, Virginia, 22968. The family invites all who knew him to come and share in the celebration of a life well-lived.
