

Thomas D. Payne, Sr. of Charlottesville, also known as Tucker, passed away in his sleep at the age of 94 on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 after an extended illness. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ella S. Payne; his parents, Thomas Turner Payne and Ruth Mansfield; 12 siblings, and one granddaughter, Jennifer Wells. He is survived by his children, Thomas D. Payne, Jr. and his wife Cindy; Donna P. Barbour and her husband Ricky; Kenneth A. Payne and his wife Lillian; Timothy R. Payne and his wife Kathryn; and Risa M. Garcia and her husband Edgar. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Thomas served in the Army Air Force during World War II for 37 months with the rank of Sergeant. During the war he met his wife, Ella J. Senger of Buckingham County and they were married 59 years until her passing in 2004. In 1969, Thomas started his own business, T. D. Payne Plumbing and Heating, Inc., which he ran for 20 years before retiring. In 2007 he started writing poems and then went on to publish three novels and was working on his 4th at the time of his passing. He enjoyed his daily posting of poems and stories to his friends and family on Facebook. Services will be held for Thomas on Saturday, November 24th at Teague Funeral Service on Ivy Road in Charlottesville. Family will accept visitors at Teague from 9:00 am to 10:00 am with the funeral service to start at 10:00. Graveside will be held at Holly Memorial Gardens on Rout 29 at 11:00 am with a reception immediately after at Forest Lakes North Clubhouse.
