

Troy Thomas Rice, age 90, of Charlottesville, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015, at the University of Virginia Medical Center.Born on February 15, 1925, Troy was a son of the late James Thomas Rice and Edna Lewis Hamlet. In addition to his parents, Troy was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Rice and step-father, John Hamlet.Troy is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Kathleen Carter Rice; daughter, Barbara Yowell and her husband, Harry; sons, James Thomas Rice and his wife, Tonia and Richard Wayne Rice and his wife, Kimberly; grandchildren, Scott, Kenny, and Shannon Yowell and Jaime and Bradley Rice; great-grandchildren, Mallory, Nicholas, Riley, Reese, Reagan, Carter, Mason, and Dawson Yowell and Brady and Lily Rice; and step-sister, Geraldine Shelton and family. Troy is also survived by cousins, John, Margaret, and Josephine of Hurt and Gretna, Virginia.Troy was a decorated veteran of World War II having served in the United States Army's 507th Antiaircraft Artillery Gun Battalion. He served in the Southern Philippines, New Guinea, and Luzon as a gun crewman.Troy and Kathleen owned Rice's Jeweler's. After 32 years of service to the Charlottesville community Troy and Kathleen retired in the late 1980s.A Graveside Service will be conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Monticello Memory Gardens with military honors.The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, March 20, 2015, at Teague Funeral Home.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Troy's name to Disabled Veterans of America, 1201 Brock Rock Blvd., Richmond, VA 23249
