

He was eldest born to Burl and Ruth (Summers) Nelson, who both preceded him in death. His sister, Rita King, of Las Vegas, preceded him in death in September of 2024. Rita’s infant twin sister, Ruth Ann, also preceded him in death.
Arlen is survived by his sister, Carol (Richard) Gorham of Galesburg, IL; three nephews, Kevin Gorham of Prescott, AZ, Gregory and Brent Cox of Las Vegas, NV; and one niece, DeAnne Syed of Aurora, IL.
Arlen was a 1955 graduate of Yates City High School and earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Illinois University. Arlen retired from teaching physical education at Glenwood Middle School. He also coached cross country, flag football, and boy’s track. He is probably best remembered for his remarkable dedication to his students and was one of the first inductees of the Hall of Fame from the middle school. Arlen is also remembered for his pug dogs who accompanied him to school and sporting events daily.
Arlen will be missed by his many friends, fellow teachers, and students in the community who were an important part of his life. Arlen’s family would like to thank his friends and neighbors who assisted him in his later days.
A private family burial will be held at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington, IL.
