James R. “Jim” Kulavic, Jr., 69, of Chatham, IL, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, at Springfield Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his devoted family. Jim was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, remembered by all who knew him for his outgoing spirit, generous heart, and deep love for the people in his life.
Born on June 3, 1955, in Springfield, IL, Jim was the son of James Sr. and Margaret Ann Kulavic. Growing up in a lively household as one of seven siblings, he learned early the value of family, faith, and hard work. Jim attended a Catholic grade school, graduated from Griffin High School, and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Sangamon State University. He spent much of his career as a dedicated accountant, retiring from the State of Illinois in 2014.
Jim’s greatest pride and joy came not from his work, but from the life he built with his beloved wife, Marie E. Zito. They married on August 7, 1982, and together shared more than four decades of love, laughter, and partnership. Together, they raised their two sons, Robert “Bobby” (Ashton) Kulavic and Kevin (Casey) Kulavic, who were the center of Jim’s world. He took special delight in his role as "Papa" to his grandchildren, Ethan, Alaina, and Coen, with another granddaughter soon to arrive. His legacy of love and guidance will continue to grow through them.
A man of remarkable craftsmanship, Jim could seemingly fix or build anything. He took particular pride in remodeling each of the family’s homes, transforming spaces with his own two hands and tireless attention to detail. From knocking down walls, to laying tile, to rewiring entire rooms, Jim tackled every project with determination and skill—and never left a job unfinished. His sons were by his side for many of these projects, learning not just how to use tools, but how to approach life with the same persistence, integrity, and pride in a job well done.
Jim’s talents also extended to woodworking, a passion that brought him both joy and fulfillment. His custom cabinetry, furniture, and hand-built pieces, crafted with patience and precision, are lasting treasures that will be passed down for generations.
A lifelong supporter of Scouting, Jim was deeply involved in his sons’ path to becoming Eagle Scouts. He lived by the very values the program teaches: honesty, service, and loyalty. He was a mentor not only to his sons, but to countless young people who benefited from his steady guidance, sense of humor, and quiet wisdom.
Jim was a proud member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Chatham, where his faith remained an anchor throughout his life. He will be remembered for his sharp wit, infectious laughter, and ability to light up a room with his stories and good-natured charm.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Marie; sons, Bobby (Ashton) and Kevin (Casey); grandchildren, Ethan, Alaina, and Coen; and eagerly awaited granddaughter. He is also survived by his siblings, Jay (Julie) Kulavic, Margie (Skip) Homeier, Mary Ann (Mark) Pyle, Marilyn (Steve) Brown, Jean (John) Zoerner, and Jennifer (Jeff) Miller; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and close friends who will miss him dearly.
His legacy is one of hard work, selflessness, laughter, and love - a legacy that will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know him.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, prior to services.
