Kay entered this world on October 2, 1940, as the eldest child and daughter of Homer and Dorothy Mendenhall. Kay’s early years helped further solidify her love of farm-life as she was actively involved in the 4-H Club. Kay also established lasting relationships at the Chatham Bowling Alley which, ironically, is the building where her life tribute will be held.
Born and raised in Springfield, Kay was a lifelong resident who brought joy and warmth to everyone who knew her. She married the love of her life, James (Jim) Miller in 1960. They were married for 55 years. Jim preceded her in death in 2015. A proud graduate of Glenwood High School, Class of 1958, she remained deeply connected to her community, often found enjoying the Chatham Library or cheering on her favorite teams — the St. Louis Cardinals and University of Illinois basketball. Kay was beyond an avid reader…she consumed books with great enthusiasm and took great pleasure in passing her books on to others. She spent her entire life on the property she loved, tending to it with pride and care. Whether she was out on her Kubota mower or planting flowers, Kay found peace and purpose in caring for her property.
She and her late husband, Jim, shared a deep love of travel and adventure. Together, they explored the country in their motor home before eventually settling on Fort Myers, Florida, as their winter escape. Some of their most cherished memories were made at several World Series games, cheering on their beloved Cardinals — a dream come true for both.
Kay was known for her incredible cooking, sharp wit, and generous heart. She cherished time spent with family and friends and was especially devoted to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The “favorite” child was undoubtedly her loyal dog, Bentley, who was always by her side, offering companionship and comfort unfailingly.
Kay fought a tremendous and difficult battle over the last year but was always supported by friends and family. To quote her grandson Zach’s most recent Mother’s Day card, “You are fighting so hard, and it inspires me every day! I love you Grandma.” She was a tiny woman with a tremendous spirt and will to live.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Donna) Miller of Chatham, Brad (Kari) Miller of Springfield, and Amy (Pat) Capranica of Sherman; grandchildren, Nicholas (Morgan) Capranica of Sherman, Emily (Dominic) Ozella of Petersburg, Sydney Miller of Springfield, and Zach Miller of Chatham; sugar-sweet great-grandchildren, Noa (2 years) and Nico Ozella (2 months) of Petersburg; brothers, Gary (Susan) Mendenhall of Colorado and Wayne (Carole) Mendenhall of Springfield; as well as several nieces and nephews.
