She was born on September 27, 1931, in Sorento, IL, the daughter of Albert and Virginia (Sloan) Reed.
Marge graduated from Litchfield High School in 1949 and attended Eastern Illinois University, Blackburn, and Southern Illinois University – Edwardsville, earning a master’s degree. She went on to work as an English teacher for Carlinville High School and college. Marge directed many plays, was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing cards, solving crossword puzzles, and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Christopher Deffenbaugh; and five brothers.
Marge is survived by her children, Jude (Steve) Jones of O’Fallon, MO, Robert (Meloney) Deffenbaugh of Chatham, and Rebecca Hunt of Springfield, IL; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center, prior to services.
Memorial Gathering and Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, at Butler Funeral Home – Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, followed by the Ceremony at 12:00 p.m., with Celebrant Parian Hull officiating. Burial will follow at Chatham Memorial Cemetery.
