

Sandy was born on May 17, 1938, in Lincoln, IL, the daughter of Edward and Mabel (McCray) Sumski.
On February 13, 1960, Sandy married Dale LeRoy Bergman in Lincoln, Illinois. Together, they explored different locations across the United States as Dale served in the Army. Through each transition Sandy remained a faithful partner—steadfast, supportive, and brave in the face of change.
Throughout her life, Sandy’s steady faith and gentle strength were evident to all who knew her. A devoted member of St. Joseph the Worker in Chatham, Illinois, she lived with a quiet devotion—marked by kindness, patience, and a thoughtful compassion that offered comfort in both ordinary days and difficult moments. Her honesty and loyalty formed the foundation of the relationships she cherished, and she will be remembered as deeply beloved by those who had the privilege of sharing life with her.
Sandy built a respected career as an Executive Secretary with the Illinois Department of Corrections, serving with diligence and care until her retirement. In her work, she was known for her reliability and calm perseverance—qualities that reflected the same devoted spirit she carried into every part of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mabel; husband, Dale Bergman; and sister, Regina A. Beard
Sandy is survived by her sons, Roger (April) Bergman of Thayer, IL and Scott Bergman of Springfield, IL; three grandchildren, Emily (Timothy) Brown, Riley Bergman, and Jenna Bergman; one great granddaughter, Nora Brown; siblings, Sharon (Jerry) Davis of Sherman, IL, and Michael Sumski of Palm Springs, CA; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation & Funeral Ceremony: The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:15 a.m. on Monday, July 13, 2026, at Butler Funeral Home-Chatham, 8855 State Route 4, Chatham, IL 62629. The ceremony will follow at 11:30 a.m., with Fr. Joe Molloy officiating.
Sandy will be laid to rest alongside Dale, July 13, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery, 5063 Camp Butler Rd., Springfield, IL.
