December 3, 1946 – November 19, 2020
Carol English, 73, of North Chatham, passed away on November 19th, 2020.
She was the wife of James Radford English who died in 2003.
Mrs. English was born in Boston and raised in Milton and Marshfield during the summer months.
At Milton High School, she captained the field hockey and volley ball teams and co-captained the basketball and softball teams. She also swam competitively throughout New England.
She was a graduate of Garland Junior College and the University of Denver where she double-majored in Art History and Education, class of 1968.
After college, rather than going to graduate school as her parents wished, she traveled extensively throughout Europe, Greece, Turkey and Israel. While she had many wonderful adventures, some of the most memorable were punting in Cambridge, skiing the Olympic men’s downhill course in Innsbruck, mountain climbing in Norway, participating in a dig in Crete, guarding livestock armed with an Uzi while living at Kibbutz Gezer, traveling on the Orient Express and riding her horse “Allez” over the beaches and through the villages of the Algarve during her three-month stay in Portugal. She was always very grateful for the kindness and generosity extended to her from people of many backgrounds, races and religions during that time.
Returning to the United States in 1971, Mrs. English moved to New York City and started her career in advertising. While there she worked with Alan Torbet Associates and Schaller-Rubin Advertising. In 1978 she moved to Boston, working as a media planner/buyer at Maslow, Gold and Rothschild and later as a media supervisor at Arnold Worldwide.
Mrs. English loved city living and moved reluctantly to her seasonal home in North Chatham when her husband retired in 1992. She continued to work in advertising on a freelance basis for several years. Mrs. English, an animal lover, enjoyed the arts, playing bridge, gardening, and prior to her husband’s death she was an ardent traveler. She was an active volunteer and served on the board of several business and community organizations. She was the treasurer of the Friends of Monomoy Theatre and Friends of Trees for many years. She particularly enjoyed working at St. Christopher’s Gift and Consignment Shop, the Eldredge Public Library, the Chatham Food Pantry, and the Atwood House, and for over 20 years she made dozens of tea sandwiches for the SHYC Sunday races.
Mrs. English was a member of the Chatham Beach and Tennis Club, Stage Harbor Yacht Club, the Chatham Garden Club, Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary, The Chatham Historical Society and the Monomoy Yacht Club. She also held memberships, supporting her late husband, in the Harvard Clubs of Boston and Cape Cod.
She is survived by her beloved cats, Dulcinea, Theophilus, Cinco de Mayo, and Bijou, and two brothers. Burial will be private. No memorial services will be held.
