Bob grew up in Brookline, MA where he attended high school and played baseball in every spare moment. He was in the first graduating class of Stonehill College (B.S.), N. Easton, MA, a graduate of Boston College (M.S.), and earned his Ph.D. from Fordham University in New York City. His graduate work included research at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute on Cape Cod and Columbia University Medical School.
Bob began his career as a medical research scientist while stationed at the U.S. Army Institute for Environmental Medicine in Natick, MA during the Korean War. He then worked in neuro-metabolic and sleep research for 35 years at the Nathan Kline Institute in NY; he also did research at Yale University and was a Research Associate Professor at New York University Medical School-Medical Center.
Bob was an avid, lifelong artist, receiving many awards for his watercolor paintings in NY and MA. He was very active in his community with the Boy Scouts of America, SPCA, and the Hopper House Art Gallery in Nyack, NY. He enjoyed many pastimes, including travelling, gardening, and listening to big band music. He also loved cookouts at the beach with friends and family on Cape Cod and was known for his great sense of humor and famous for his lively story-telling. Bob was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Anne, with whom he shared 65 wonderful years of marriage, and their seven children: Robert (Regina), Christopher, Anne (Peter) Pawlicki, John (Nasrin), Edward (Suzanne), Suzanne (James) Zuidema, Jennifer (Adam) Rankin, 18 cherished grandchildren and 4 dear great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother John (Patricia), his cousins Deborah Grandy and Diane Smigel, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a son and his sister.
Visiting hours will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Sunday, April 10th and 8:30-9:30 AM on Monday, April 11th at the Nickerson Funeral Home, Crowell Rd. in Chatham. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10 AM on Monday, April 11th at Holy Redeemer Church in Chatham or mass online at www.holyredeemerchatham.org
Burial will follow in People’s Cemetery, Chatham, MA
