Born in Maryland and raised in Barrington, Rhode Island, Betty was the daughter of an Episcopal minister and grew up with three brothers. Betty attended Skidmore College and later earned her degree in Occupational Therapy from Quinnipiac University. In 1955, she married the love of her life, Malcolm P. Root, and together they enjoyed living in New Canaan, CT, Casey Key, FL, and Chatham, MA.
Betty had a wide range of interests. She had a natural eye for interior decorating, loved tennis, golf, sailing, and was a devoted reader. She will be fondly remembered for her delight in a Dunkin’ frozen mocha coffee with whipped cream, for sharing a donut with her three year-old great-grandson, Owen—named after her father—and for the sheer joy she felt celebrating her granddaughter Emily’s wedding on a bluff in North Chatham.
She is survived by her son, Michael Root; daughters, Lisa Moulton and Victoria Root; and granddaughters, Melissa Moulton and Emily Parker; and brothers, Greg and Don Stone. Betty was predeceased by her beloved husband, Malcolm, and their first son, David. She will be buried with them in Connecticut.
Memorial donations are welcome at the Cape Cod Alzheimer’s Family Support Center.
