Evelyn Marie Allard Ambriscoe, a resident of Chatham, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at her home on January 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family who miss her dearly. Born in Danbury, Connecticut on December 10, 1953, the daughter of Jacques and Muriel Allard, Evelyn grew up in Milford and later lived in Middletown, Connecticut.
Evelyn was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. At the heart of Evelyn’s life was her loving and adoring marriage to her husband of 48 years, Michael Ambriscoe, which anchored their family and was unmistakable to all who knew them. Evelyn was a proud and loving mother to Keith Ambriscoe and his wife Samantha Miller, and Jaclyn Hagner and her husband Richard Hagner, and a doting grandmother to ten grandchildren, who were the light of her life.
A passionate artist, Evelyn had an extraordinary gift for adding beauty, color, and perfection to everything she touched. She graduated from Lauralton Hall in Milford and magna cum laude from Central Connecticut State University, with a Bachelor of Arts in English and a minor in Art, an education that reflected her lifelong love of both words and visual expression. Through her art, music, and service, she enriched her community in countless ways. In Connecticut, Evelyn served as President of the local Parent Teacher’s Association and was an active member of the South Congregational Church of Middletown where she was a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, and was a member of the handbell choir. Evelyn was known for her ability to master any craft that interested her, including painting, sculpting, singing, baking, sewing, and writing.
Evelyn moved to Chatham in 2005, when her husband became Chief of the Chatham Fire Department. Soon after her arrival, Evelyn’s artwork quickly became familiar and a beloved part of Chatham life. Her vibrant shark and whale paintings were displayed annually at Chatham’s Art in the Park, and her artistic talents also graced productions of the Chatham Drama Guild and seasonal signs displayed in front of the First Congregational Church. In summer, Evelyn’s voice was a treasured presence as she sang the National Anthem at Veteran’s Field for the Chatham A’s baseball games, blending her musical talent and patriotism. Evelyn served as President of the Chatham Garden Club and was an active member of the First Congregational Church of Chatham, where she chaired the Music Committee, sang in the choir, and played in the handbell choir. She also worked for several years in the Chatham Permit Department, where her kindness and positive energy left a lasting impression.
Compassionate to people and animals, intelligent, energetic, and always smiling, Evelyn lived life as she painted—vibrantly and colorfully. She could often be seen walking the sidewalks throughout town, and she loved watching the sun set from Chatham’s beaches. Evelyn’s legacy lives on in her family, her art, her music, and the many lives she brightened through her diverse talents and her generosity of spirit.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at First Congregational Church of Chatham, 650 Main Street, Chatham, MA 02633. A celebration of life will follow the service. Attendees are encouraged to dress colorfully, as Evelyn would have loved.
