Frankie Maass Doty
CHATHAM, MA, and ALLENDALE, N.J. — Frankie Maass Doty, born on Jan. 20, 1925, in Austin, Texas, passed peacefully in her sleep early on Sept. 11, 2012. A longtime resident of Allendale, N.J., and Chatham, Mass., Frankie was a beloved teacher for many years in the Waldwick and Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J., school systems. She held a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Texas, and an M.A. in education from Paterson State Teachers College, now known as William Paterson University. She loved to travel and sailed three times with Semester at Sea. She skied, biked and played tennis into her 80s, and never met a board or card game she didn't like. Frankie lived as she died, cheerful, happy, and surrounded by friends and family. Frankie was involved in community affairs such as the Ridgewood, NJ, College Club, and the Red Hat Society. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Frankie was also active in the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Carl Maass and Larry Doty, and her sister, Claudia Michaels. Mr. Maass was a veteran of the U.S. Army’s 10th Mountain Division and Frankie proudly displayed that fact on her automobile’s license plate. She is survived by her niece, Virginia Harlow of Carbondale, Colo.; a cousin, Margo McCord of Roanoke, Va.; a stepson, Steve Doty and his wife Tobi of Ramsey, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Linda Doty, and Joanne Doty Collins and Joanne's husband Cody of Columbia, Md.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and more friends than you can count. A memorial service will be held in her honor at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Sibley Chapel, 625 Main St., Chatham, MA 02633. A funeral and interment will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 56 Sheridan Ave., Ho-Ho-Kus, NJ 07423. In lieu of flowers, donations in Frankie's memory can be made to Allendale Ambulance Corps, 26 Arcadia Road, Allendale, NJ 07401.

Mrs. Maass was my second grade teacher in Ho-Ho-Kus. I loved her so much then and still have a handwritten note she gave me at the end of the school year back in 1966. She is one of the reasons I became an educator. Thoughts are with Mrs. Doty's family. She made a difference.

I was very sad to hear of Frankies' death in Cape Cod. She and I had been neighbors in Allendale , NJ for many years and remained close friends. In the spring and fall, Frankie would visit me at the NJ shore and I would get up to the Cape every summer to eat lobster and play miniture golf.
We all will miss her active life, especially me...203-982-3064,
