Gladys Goodspeed Lumpkin

Gladys (Goodspeed) Lumpkin, 96, a lifelong resident of Chatham, MA passed away peacefully on March 24, 2018 at Cape Cod Hospital. Gladys was the wife of the late Claude (Dick) Lumpkin for 65 years until his death in 2008. They met and married during WWII when Dick was stationed at the U.S. Naval Radio Station-Chatham.

Gladys was the daughter of the late Dorothy and George W. Goodspeed Sr. Her roots can be traced back to Jehosaphat Eldredge, one of the founders of Chatham.

She is survived by one daughter, Donna Lumpkin of Chatham, two brothers Benjamin K. Goodspeed and George W Goodspeed Jr.(Linda), nephews Benjamin C. Goodspeed and George W. Goodspeed III and cousins Karen Goggins, Roxanne Carnes and Andy Eldridge. She was also very fond of Dick’s family: Carolyn Knott, Fred Gross Jr., Arthur Barnes, Christopher Barnes, Amanda Barnes Kuhl and their families. Gladys was pre-deceased by her sisters-in-law, Allyne Goodspeed and Virginia Gross.

Gladys graduated from Chatham High School in the class of 1939. She became a telephone operator in Chatham and could still remember many of the phone numbers. Gladys joined the Chatham Methodist Church in 1940 and was active as a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the Wesleyans and worked on church suppers.

She was on the board of directors and president of the Monomoy Branch of the Cape Cod Hospital Aid Association and volunteered for the Chatham Visiting Nurse Association. Gladys was also very active for many years at the Red Cross Bloodmobiles and was a Girl Scout Leader. Gladys volunteered at the Chatham Historical Society and was a supporter of the Chatham Marconi Maritime Center.

She enjoyed swimming, boating, spending time at the family camp on North Beach Island, attending Chatham Band Concerts, traveling, playing games and singing old songs. Most of all, Gladys cherished her family and friends.

The family expresses gratitude to the staff of Pleasant Bay Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their love, concern and care for almost two years. They also appreciate the care and concern shown by the doctors, nurses and the Chaplain at Cape Cod Hospital.

Services will be held at the First United Methodist Church in Chatham on Saturday April 14th at 11:00 AM. Visiting hours will be omitted at her request and the burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Visiting Nurse Association of Cape Cod at 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA 02601 or the charity of one’s choice.

We were always neighbors, from childhood on. She was a delightful person, always ready
with a smile. Even when our children walked to school and stopped to talk to her horse
ornament at the end of her walkway. All the memories of Gladys will be special. Pete
and Marcia.

Judy and I have many fond memories of Dick and Gladys - especially time spent together at the camps at North Beach. Another old, true Cape Codder gone - so very sad. Gladys was very fortunate to have such a caring and committed daughter to ease her final years.
