November 25, 1924 – February 24, 2018
Harvey was born on November 25, 1924 in Providence, Rhode Island. He is predeceased by his parents, Paul and Bertha Seltzer and his brothers Morton, Jerome, Sheldon and Melvyn. He graduated from Hope High School in Providence. Harvey later served in the United States Army during World War II as a Sergeant in Company C 4th Medical Battalion. He was very proud of his military service and would not leave the house without his WWII cap. Harvey resettled briefly in Rhode Island where he met the love of his life, Betty, while working for Betty’s brother-in-law Frank Hurley. Harvey and Betty were married on May 8, 1954, at the South Chatham home of Betty’s parents, Warren and Jessie Peirce. After a brief move to Miami, Florida, Harvey and Betty moved back North where they settled in Natick, Massachusetts to raise their three sons. Harvey had a long career in the shoe business. He retired as a shoe buyer and general manager of The Shed shoe store (Mossie’s Distributing Company) of Wesley, Massachusetts. Upon retirement, Harvey and Betty moved back to Cape Cod where they enjoyed regular visits to the Chatham Bakery and walks at Red River.
Sadly, Betty passed away on December 7, 2008 after a brief illness. Harvey’s enduring love for Betty was present throughout his life and a source of great solace in recent years. Harvey was a dedicated, proud father of three sons Robert (Maxine), Mark (Anne) and Ken (Suzanne). He also leaves 9 grandchildren: Amy (Bruce) Gresczyk , Sharon (Jay) St. Jean, Paul (Maggie), Jeff (Danielle), Riki Williamson, Gordon, Jackie, Daniel and Noah) and 6 great-grandchildren (Lyzah, Julie, Elijah, Jacob, Bruce III, and Adeline). He is also survived by his beloved nieces and nephews Butch (Cindy) Hurley, Sue (George) Myers and Judy (Chuck) Riemenschneider, Jeanne (Jack) McMath, Robert (Cheryl) Seltzer and Jill (Ron) Charbonneau, David Gilbert, and Michael Seltzer. He enjoyed watching reruns of Westerns, following his favorite Boston sports teams and visits with his family, especially during the annual Thanksgiving get together at the Hearth N’ Kettle.
A service will be at the South Chatham Cemetery at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, February 27, 2018. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands, Inc.
