

Helen Elizabeth (Abrahamson) Owens, 90, died on May 6th in her home in Harwich with family beside her. Born on July 21, 1923 in Boylston she was the fourth of six children born to Swedish immigrants Karl and Ellen Abrahamson.
After high school, Helen worked as a secretary for a short time before joining the SPARS, where she was trained to operate the LORAN signaling equipment and was then assigned to the Chatham Lighthouse Coast Guard Station. Helen was a World War II Veteran. Helen was also an avid crafter and entered local craft fairs up till her birthday last summer, which she celebrated with her many family members and friends. Over the years she was active at the South Chatham and East Harwich Methodist churches and gave many volunteer hours manning the Benefit Shop. She would walk a mile for a lobster and many others would walk a mile for her apple pie and Swedish bread.
Helen is survived by four children: Kenneth P Owens of Alaska, Linda L Anderson of Harwich, David W Owens (Mary Alice) of Chatham and Wendy D Strickler (Stephen) of East Harwich, as well as 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and a large extended family. She was preceeded in death by her husband, Faye R Owens, son Dickie, grandson Ken Owens and great-granddaughter Lilly Owens.
Her visitation will be held on Thursday, May 8, 2014 from 5-8 p.m. in the Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA. Her graveside service will be held on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. in People’s Cemetery, Crowell Road, Chatham, MA.
