Herb was born on September 24, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY the first child of Herbert and Marie Schurmann. He grew up in the German neighborhood of Ridgewood on the Queens Brooklyn border. He graduated from Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn and St Peter’s University in Jersey City, NJ where he majored in accounting. Most of Herb’s career was with Weston Instruments in Newark, NJ. His last two positions were Assistant to the Comptroller and Head of Purchasing.
For many years he resided in Woodbridge, NJ where he raised his five children. He was an enthusiastic volunteer centering his volunteer activities around their activities. He especially enjoyed the years he was involved with the Woodbridge Little League. He held several positions including Treasurer, Coach, Manager, Head of Umpires and Player Agent. Stories about him from these days are remembered fondly not only by his own children but by many of their friends.
Herb married his present wife, Joanna, on January 2, 1988 in Liberty Corner, NJ and expanded his family to include her three sons. They lived in Basking Ridge, NJ for thirteen years before retiring to Chatham. During his retirement he and Joanna enjoyed international travel to several European destinations and domestic travel to visit friends and family. Herb loved music, everything from opera and symphony to soft rock and country. He enjoyed wine and fine dining, the theater, and visiting art museums and galleries. He loved analyzing stocks and following the financial markets. He was blessed with a wonderful wit which would bring smiles to the faces of family, friends and those he encountered in the community.
Herb brought his enthusiasm for volunteering to the Cape. For many years he delivered for the Meals on Wheels program in Chatham always spending time to visit along the way with the clients who he thought of as friends. He was eager to substitute whenever needed. In 2010 he was honored by being named the “Volunteer of the Year” by Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands. Herb was also active at the First Congregational Church of Chatham where he served as an usher and as a Deacon.
