Ina M. Malaguti of Chatham, Massachusetts passed away on September 23, 2021, at the age of 90. Born and raised in Waterville, Maine, she was the daughter of David and Lena Morin. As a child, Ina was intellectually curious, an avid reader, and a gifted artist, attributes that would extend into adulthood. She would remain close to her only sibling, David, until his death in 2014. After graduating from Waterville Senior High School, Ina obtained an Associate Degree from Thomas College and began a career as a legal secretary in the greater-Waterville area.
In the early 1950s, Ina travelled with friends to Boston via the old B&M Railroad to see a play and enjoy the “big city” for a weekend. That weekend she met Peter, her future husband. The two married in Waterville on October 18, 1953, honeymooned in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, and moved to greater-Boston to forge a life together. Ina found employment with a bank, where she would stay until delivering her two children, Peter and Mary. Although she enjoyed the intellectual give and take of the business world, Ina left gainful employment to raise her young children. As her children approached their teenage years, however, Ina returned to paid work and soon found her final, longest, and most fulfilling job tenure as an administrative assistant in the History Department at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. There, she formed many warm relationships with both faculty and students.
After the death of her husband in 1996, Ina retired from Brandeis, put an addition on the Chatham vacation home she and Peter had built decades earlier, and made Cape Cod her year-round home. Once on the Cape fulltime, Ina transformed her avocation as a painter of watercolor landscapes into her primary retirement pursuit. She took advanced art classes, participated in scores of art shows, and painted hundreds of watercolor landscapes until shortly before her death. Her children, grandchildren, and many friends still proudly possess landscape paintings Ina had gifted them over the years.
Ina is survived by her son, Peter Malaguti and his wife Paula, both of Andover, MA; her daughter, Mary Malaguti Lanctot and her husband Jeff, both of Chatham, MA; six grandchildren: Michael Malaguti and his wife Catherine Cote, both of Pelham, NH, Paul Malaguti and his wife Michelle, both of Wakefield, MA, John Malaguti of Andover, MA, Peter Lanctot and his wife Ginger Dolden, both of Brooklyn, NY, Daniel Lanctot of Harwich, MA, Nina Lanctot of Wellfleet, MA; and one great grandchild, Sophia Malaguti of Wakefield, MA. Ina’s survivors will always remember her dry wit, wide-ranging fluency in a variety of subjects, and unyielding devotion to her family.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of Ina’s favorite charities: The Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N.
