Janine Santoro

March 8, 1930January 18, 2013

Janine Cauhape Santoro, aged 82, died quietly at her home in South Chatham, MA, on the evening of January 18, 2013 after a long illness. She was born in Brookline, MA, the daughter of Jean Cauhape, a French violist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Natasha Ongirsky, a native of Russia. Janine’s great love of art, and talent for both painting and the piano, touched all of those who knew her.

A graduate of Beaver Country Day School and Wheelock College, Janine studied classical concert piano and earned teaching credentials, which she put to good use at the Grace Church School in New York City caring for under privileged children and serving as organist. For many years she ran a summer arts camp for young children at her home in Dover, MA. Married to Dr. Benjamin Santoro since1969, she raised three daughters from her first marriage, and after spending time remodeling her family home on Cape Cod, moved there permanently in 1988. Using her home building experience, she teamed up with a local builder, and became a real estate agent specializing in helping clients creatively update their summer cottages.

Janine was a warm and enthusiastic person, who greatly enjoyed life. Her favorite places to be were working in her beautiful garden, painting in her art studio, playing the piano, cooking in her kitchen and spending time with friends and family at her home by the sea. She was proud to have been accepted to the Cape Cod Art Association with her first entry.

Janine is survived by her husband Dr. Benjamin Santoro, her three daughters, Natasha Tobin of Newton, MA, Alexandra Gil of Durham, NC, and Janine Davila of Richmond, VA, her four grandchildren, and her niece Deborah Hester of South Chatham, MA.

A service will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument Road, Orleans, MA 02653 on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at 1:00 pm. There will be a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be sent in her name for lung cancer research through the American Cancer Society at, or to her personal favorite charity, Operation Smile at 6435 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509.

Hi Debbie. You will probably not remember me - Betsy Thomas. I was Gordon Thomas' little sister. One summer on the Cape Janine had that wonderful MG and would drive you, me and your sister all around. I tried to call you but the number I had found for Chatham went disconnected. Email me ( if you would like to make contact. I have something amazing to share with you. I am sorry you have lost Janine. Wish I had kept more in touch.
