Born on November 20, 1943, and raised in Newark, New Jersey, Joe was a proud graduate of St. Benedict's Preparatory School and Seton Hall University. He dedicated the majority of his professional life to the Essex County Probation Department. It was there that he met his wife, Joan B. Caputo fondly known as Mac.
Joe and Mac were married in 1975 and made their home in West Orange, New Jersey. After retiring in 1993, they spent increasing amounts of time on Cape Cod before eventually making Chatham their permanent home.
Joe, Mac, and their children, Lauren and Anita spent time at their cottage in South Chatham, returning each year. Days spent in South Chatham were some of Joe's favorite times. He enjoyed clamming at Forest Beach, sailing the Sunfish with its blue-and-white sail, riding bikes to the beach, and spending time with his family. Joe, Mac and the kids enjoyed their time on Cape Cod, and he was happy to retire there with Mac. After retirement, Joe and Mac also enjoyed spending time at their home in Naples, Florida, where they wintered for many years before eventually residing full-time in Chatham.
Following retirement, Joe enjoyed working as a Realtor in Chatham.
Joe loved running and remained active throughout his life. He was a devoted fan of the New York Yankees and the Cleveland Browns, loyally following both teams through the years. He was inducted into the St. Benedict's Preparatory School Hall of Fame alongside his fellow members of the 1959 track team.
Joe was also active in Democratic town politics and served as Chair of the Chatham Democratic Town Committee for eight years.
Joe loved his dogs and enjoyed the company of many loyal companions over the years. His Standard Poodle, Charlie, his Labrador Retriever, Jack, and his cherished Greyhounds, Cord, Casey, Patty, Belle, Mikey, and Marco were an important part of his life and brought him years of happiness and companionship.
Joe was known for his quick wit, memorable one-liners, and dry sense of humor. He never missed an opportunity to tell a story or offer an observation. Whether spending time with family, cheering on his favorite teams, relaxing on Cape Cod, or enjoying the company of his dogs, Joe embraced life with gratitude. Above all, he had a deep appreciation for his family, friends, and the life he lived. He often said, "I'm the luckiest man alive," a phrase that perfectly captured his appreciation for the life he lived.
Joe was predeceased by his father, Frank Caputo; his mother, Gilda Caputo; and his brother, Frank Christian.
Joe is survived by his wife of 51 years, Joan; his daughters, Lauren Caputo (Martin) and Anita Caputo Hockwitt (John); his cherished grandchildren, Jake, Alex, Maddy, and Charlie; his brother, Robert Caputo, and sister-in-law, Theresa; his sister-in-law, Carol Kolek and her partner, Carlton Dasent; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, John and Peggy Baltz; his niece and nephews, Marc, Nicole, Ethan, Adam, Brian, and Matthew; and many extended family members and friends.
