Joseph Craig, just a few days short of his 75 birthday, died unexpectedly although peacefully, on Thursday, April 18th 2019 at Tufts Medical Center, with his wife of 51 years, Louise, by his side.

Born May 1st, 1944, Joe was the son of the late Joseph and Lucille Craig. He is survived by his two siblings, Dennis Craig and Carol Fabian. The family lived in West Orange New Jersey. Joe attended West Orange Mountain High School and was in the school’s first graduating class. Joe played center on the high school football team and was an accomplished drummer lending his talents to local bands including the likes of The Four Lovers who later went on to become The Four Seasons.

Joe continued his education at Montclair State College and earned his degree in History and Business Education. He took his teaching skills to East Orange High School where he taught for 2 years. It was then he left the world of education and entered the business world. Joe’s final position was as American Vice President at Prevost Car, a French Canadian Bus manufacturer. After leaving Prevost he kept himself busy traveling doing consulting in the transportation associated business.

Deciding it was officially time to retire, Joe and Louise built a home in Chatham. Once settled in their new community Joe decided to use his teaching skills once again. He substituted at Chatham High School and later at Monomoy Regional High School. He loved getting back into the classroom and thoroughly enjoyed interacting with the students, especially those in the special needs program.

At the time of his death Joe was a member of the Chatham Zoning Board of Appeals. In addition, he was the Chatham representative to the Cape Cod National Seashore Advisory Commission. Few things made him happier than to introduce people to the seashore and share all the beauty of this special place on The Cape.

Joe’s passing leaves a heavy heart for his wife Louise, daughter Jennifer, her husband Andrew and their daughters, Maya and Skylar. He is also survived by daughter Heather, husband Doug, and their children Taryn and Ryan.

If you would like to honor Joe’s life and memory the family suggests that you consider donating either individually or through a program which helps make Christmas special for kids in need. It’s a long way off until Christmas but to honor this wish would be greatly appreciated and as Joe felt, it is important to spread a little happiness to those going through a difficult time.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2019 from 4-7 p.m. at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham, MA. For online condolences, please visit www.nickersonfunerals.com.

Dear Grandpa,
Remember when I told you about my boyfriend? It’s been hard for me to get into my his big white Jeep Wrangler without thinking of you. He shares the same love of cars as you do. When we first met (you can ask him) I would go on and on about our early morning rides through Chatham and to School house pond to get ice cream and going to Duncan Doughnuts. He has embraced me sharing those amazing memories over and over again. He’s getting ready to go to college to be an engineer. He reminds me a lot of you in so many different ways. I love you Grandpa and I always will.

Mrs. Craig, where do we begin? You and Mr. Craig (aka “Santa”) first opened your home to us 8 years ago. That first August in Cape Cod got us hooked! How could it not?!?! We had a full itinerary, tub and beach toys, turned down beds, a crib and a full refrigerator of food/drinks ready for us when we would arrive in the middle of the night (Mr Craig sound asleep and you waiting on the sofa!) That first morning our kids wake up to their care packages and, of course, Mr C ready to listen to their stories, catch up on the year passed, head to the dump in the yellow Jeep or pick ripe veggies from the garden! We are going to miss him SO MUCH. I especially will always cherish his admiration for my patience. Well, right back atcha both - to take our brood in for days and still invite us back - that’s something special. ❤️ His love for Cape Cod is instilled in each of us. (Just not so sure we will ever eat the clams!) We love you and miss you Mr. Craig! Xo

Dear Grandpa,
I hope you had a good birthday in heaven. I hope you got to hang out with Ben. I hope you got to eat all of your favorite foods and sweets. I really miss you a lot. I remembered to wear my glasses for you because I alway remember you getting mad at me for not wearing them as soon as I woke up.

Lots of love and squeezes,
Taryn

Dear Grandpa,
I remember calling you and you saying “I can’t wait to give you a big squeeze!”. I remember every Christmas Eve we would sit in your lap and I would help you read ‘Twas The Night Before Christmas. I remember coming down the stairs every morning to see a box of Duncan Doughnuts sitting on the counter for us. I remember the early morning car rides to “the Dump”. The windows open , morning rides in your big yellow Jeep around the small town of Chatham were my favorite. Just you and me. I miss you Grandpa. I love you so so so so so much. Please rest easy. I can’t wait to give you another squeeze.

All my love to Louise. I’m so saddened to hear of this. I loved Joe. He will always be “Uncle Sheet” to Brendan. Eric, Brendan and I will go to our beach tonight and say a prayer for our “cousin”.

My heart is broken losing Joseph. We are so very sorry Louise , Heather and Jennifer. We both loved Joe and will always remember the lovely times we spent together. It is still so hard to comprehend this terrible news of his passing.

Joseph was my cousin, as well as being my Confirmation sponsor. I took his name as my middle name. It has been many years since I have seen him, but remember him fondly, and wish him peace in the next world. Thanks cuz, and Requiescat in Pace!!
