Marguerite T. Russell

MARGUERITE TEMPLE RUSSELL died peacefully in the loving care of Hope Hospice at the McCarthy Care Center in E. Sandwich, MA on April 10, 2014. She was a resident of Thirwood Place, S. Yarmouth, MA, and a long-time resident of Marshfield and Chatham. Born on September 11, 1920, in Boston, she was the second and last surviving of the four daughters of William Franklin Temple, Jr., M.D., and Marguerite Mayberry Temple. She was the dear wife for 61 years of the late Daniel Russell III, who died in 2006. A graduate of the May School, Boston, she received her undergraduate degree, Phi Beta Kappa, from Wheaton College, Norton, MA, and her master's degree from Bridgewater State. She obtained a teaching certificate and spent 20 special years teaching first grade in Marshfield. She served as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy (WAVES), having been recruited in college for WW II service in Washington, D.C. in cryptanalysis. Her unit was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon for excellence. She is survived by her son, Daniel Russell IV, and his wife Margaret, her daughter, Marguerite Russell Shreve, and her husband Gene, and her granddaughter, Abigail Mead Russell. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Temple Bruner Staples, John Bruner, Bradford Bruner, Arthur Stuart Hill, Jr., William Franklin Temple Hill, Susan Russell, Jane Russell and cousins Parker Pond and Temple Pond. She was predeceased by her daughter, Barbara Mead Russell, and her grandson, Daniel Russell V. Rita was a teacher, scholar, gardener, Girl Scout leader, athlete, and friend. She worshipped at the First Congregational Church of Chatham. A memorial service will take place at Thirwood Place, 237 N. Main St., S. Yarmouth, MA, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, 2014.
