Melvin L. Scott passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on May 15, 2025 at the age of 94. He was a cherished family man and is survived by his wife of 73 years, Carole Scott.
Melvin was born in Colorado Springs, CO on March 8, 1931. He was raised by his mother and grandparents where he learned hunting and beekeeping as a teenager. He drove tourists up Pikes Peak in his mother’s Model T Ford, once losing brakes on descent and using the emergency brake to arrive safely down the mountain. That confidence and ability to adapt bode well for his Air Force career.
He was an Air Force pilot during the Korean and Vietnam eras, and his family crisscrossed North America living on the East and West coasts, and even living several years in Panama. He and Carole moved to Chatham, MA in 1973, and lived in the home they shared until his passing.
He turned to banking after earning his MBA from Southeastern Massachusetts University. He and Carole also became “Los Vagabundos” as they traveled most winters with family and friends to warmer and interesting locales. He was a faithful member of the Chatham Walkers, a long-time marshal for the annual Chatham 4th of July parade, and founder of the Cape Cod Woodturners. He operated ‘Wood You Remember” summer art gallery for several years. But most of all he was a shining example of a devoted family man. He had all the charisma one expects from a pilot of his era. He was cheerful, competent, hard-working, empathetic, and wise.
He fell in love with Carole while he was in college. She was his trusted life partner and he continued to appreciate her music for life throughout their long, fruitful marriage. He leaves behind four adult children; Cynthia Scott-Johnson, Pamela Scott-Hanrahan, Andrew Scott and Jeanne Scott. His grandchildren are Jessica, Alexandra, Yuri, Leonid, Carolyn, and Cian. And his great-grandchildren are Lilianna, James and Tyler.
